SAM HOUSTON
When Sam Houston was sixteen years old, he left his home in Tennessee to live with the Indians.
But Sam did not want to be a farmer like his brothers. He liked to travel, to hunt, and to fish. And he liked to read, especially exciting tales about heroes of long ago.
In later years, Sam Houston became a hero himself. As the general of a little army of Texans, he fought a war against many Mexican soldiers.
"Remember the Alamo!" he cried, and his men won their battles. Sam was chosen to be the President of the new nation of Texas. Later, when Texas became part of the United States, he went to Washington as a senator.
Today the people of Texas are very proud of the man who served their state so well.
