The term "space opera" describes a certain type of science fiction, and the name was patterned after the term "horse opera," which described Western fiction of the pulpy variety — simple action-packed tales of resourceful settlers, hostile Indians, six-shooters, and horses. For this example of space opera, Silveberg simply translated a basic horse opera story to an alien planet, replaced the horses, guns, and Indians with extraterrestrial equivalents, and came up with a rollicking story.
