In a sketchily described future, an authoritarian government rules with an iron fist. Those who dare to rebel are sure to be captured, and mistakes are never made, so a humble inquisitor is justified in extracting confessions by whatever means it takes. After all, anyone who would rebel against the benevolent State surely deserves what they get, right?
