This story, which Silverberg originally titled "Starlords of Shanador," was written in a deliberately pulpy way to suit the tastes of editor William Hamling, who bought it. It is an enjoyable example of the form, with breakneck plotting and plenty of interesting twists to keep a reader engaged.
It concerns Laird Hammill, an agent from Earth, who is captured while gathering intelligence about the Shanador Starlords, who were outwardly friendly but suspected to be up to something. The Starlords are capable of impressive feats of psionic power, but there are secrets even they don't know about what a trained mind can accomplish.
